Parents and Caregivers Needed to Help with a Michigan State University Research Study on Community Programs to Support Positive Early Child Care and Education

John Carlson, College of Education , Michigan State University, and several colleagues are working with the State of Michigan to evaluate Michigan ’s Childcare Expulsion Prevention (CCEP) Program. The purpose of the CCEP program is to provide support and guidance to child care providers and to families when young children are having a challenging time in child care. Examples of challenging behaviors include behaviors such as biting and hitting often, but they also include things like extreme shyness. Many parents find parenting toddlers and young children challenging, and there are CCEP programs in some communities that are designed to support parents, their young children, and their childcare providers as they work together on challenging issues.

In this study, we are trying to learn more about services that can help families with toddlers and young children who are having a challenging time in child care. Many communities, like yours, do not currently have active CCEP programs. In these communities, we are very interested in gathering information from parents and their child care providers about their children who are experiencing challenging behaviors. Parents who choose to participate will be asked to complete two telephone interviews, about 6 months apart. Participating parents will receive $40 for each telephone interview (up to $80). Child care providers who participate will be asked to complete two brief sets of questionnaires, about 6 months apart, on their work with participating children and their families. Childcare providers will receive $20 for each completed set of questionnaires (up to $40).

If you are a child care provider working with families who might be interested in participating in this project, please contact us. We can provide you with informational flyers to make available to parents in your program. We can be reached at: 1-866-509-CCEP or email us at ccepproj@msu.edu.
